Double Yellow Headed Amazon Parrots
The Yellow Headed Amazon is an all-round winner when it comes to the family. His bright colors, accomplished singing voice and ability to talk and mimic make him popular with adults and his comical expression and personality make him a great favorite with children.
Mostly bright green with a bright yellow head it is unique in that the yellow covers the entire head and often bleeds down past the nape. This vivid yellow is repeated on the thighs. Red flashes on the ‘shoulders’ and tail add a striking contrast to the green and the underside of the wing is a fabulous blue-violet with red trim. To appreciate the beautiful wing colors it is advisable to allow your Yellow Headed Amazon plenty of room and opportunity to fly and climb.
Like many heavily bred species there are color mutations available but the natural coloring still remains the most popular choice amongst parrot lovers.
Usually 16 or 17 inches when fully grown, this robustly built bird has a square tail and a ‘squattish’ perching pose. It is an extremely active intelligent bird and needs to be taught tricks and stimulating tasks to prevent boredom. He is a good talker and singer and though not considered a squawker can be quite loud especially at dusk or dawn so owners who like an occasional ‘lie in’ are advised to keep the cage covered.
Yellow Headed Amazons love other birds and people. They enjoy performing and lift up their neck and head feathers for an amusing display. Although they can be willful and stubborn with good training they learn fast and will suddenly perform a task when you have stopped requesting it!
This parrot is extraordinarily loyal and becomes very attached to its owner or handler. It is very forgiving and affectionate once it gets to know and depend on you. It can be quite restless and will need plenty of room to move around and ‘show off’ in. The Yellow Headed Amazon tends to draw attention to its self if there are a number of people in the room.
They are generally quite healthy and if kept amused and stimulated are unlikely to pluck at themselves or get moody. Males are known to be slightly more likely to nip or be temperamental but this is usually during the mating season and only in birds that are between 5 and 18 years old. They do settle in to new surroundings but seem to pine for people who have looked after them well.
Watch their food intake as, like most Amazon Parrots, they can become over weight very quickly from just the smallest amount of extra food. If fed and cared for properly they can live from 60 to 80 years old.
This beautiful and popular bird is one of the most common species of parrot in captivity, but has sadly become endangered in the wild. Although they are widely bread and not considered rare as pets, they are expensive and you must be careful that you buy from a reputable pet store or breeder. When you buy a Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot, the bird must be accompanied by an official certification and should have a closed ring on one leg.
